Advertising rules for behavioral health and treatment centers

Keep the account. Run the ad.

Addiction treatment is the most regulated category in advertising. LegitScript Addiction Treatment Certification is a named prerequisite on Google and Meta, alumni are still patients under 42 CFR Part 2, and referral compensation is governed by EKRA.

4rules we hold to, most regulated tier
2xevery ad and creator post is read twice before it goes live
18+targeting on Meta wherever weight, cosmetic results or supplements are implied

For behavioral health and treatment centers, compliant advertising means: LegitScript Addiction Treatment Certification before any ad runs on Google or Meta. Start weeks before launch. No success rates, no clinical claims, no guarantees. Every ad and every creator post is read by a person against the current platform rule and your state license rule before it runs.

Every rule on this page was checked against the platform or regulator that publishes it on 2 September 2026. Rules change; the dates are on each item.
Most regulated tier

Four rules we hold to.

Clinic owner looking at an ads dashboard that reads Ad account disabled, policy personal attributes
Why clinic ad accounts get disabled

Five ways it happens.

  • Personal attributes. Copy that tells a viewer something about their body, health or age. "Tired all the time?" runs. "Hate your belly?" does not.
  • Drug ads in disguise. A prescription product named in an ad, or a dose, or a result. Prescription weight loss needs Meta's written permission first.
  • Age targeting. Weight loss, cosmetic procedures and supplements must target 18-plus on Meta. Miss it once and the ad set is rejected; repeat it and the account is.
  • Certification missing. Addiction treatment and prescribing telemedicine need LegitScript before the platform will run the ad at all.
  • The landing page. Lorem ipsum testimonials, fake review widgets, a claim on the page the ad did not make. Reviewers read the page, not just the ad.

What the platforms actually say.

Each item below is from the platform's or regulator's own published standard, checked on 2 September 2026. This is the read we run on every ad and every creator post before it goes live.

18+Meta: weight loss, weight gain, cosmetic procedures, supplements and reproductive health ads must target adults only.Meta Health and Wellness ad standard, updated July 22, 2026
Claims, not formatsSince July 22, 2026 Meta judges the claim. Before-and-after imagery for cosmetic procedures is allowed for adults; a pinch-the-fat close-up or a statement of inferiority is not.Meta Health and Wellness ad standard
Written permissionPrescription weight-loss products fall under Meta's Drugs and Pharmaceuticals policy: geo-targeting and written permission from Meta before the ad runs.Meta Health and Wellness ad standard

What you sendBusiness and professional licenses, registrations and DEA certificates, a HIPAA-compliant privacy policy, affiliate and partner details, product and service descriptions, ad materials. The same file, plus licensing for each level of care you advertise.
Who recognizes itGoogle, Meta, Microsoft Bing, LinkedIn, TikTok, Netflix, Nextdoor and Yahoo for ads; Visa and Mastercard for payments.Google, Meta and Microsoft for ads.
What it does not doUnlock stem cell or cell therapy ads on Google; that gate is FDA license or approval for the specific product.Replace consent, 42 CFR Part 2 or EKRA. It gets the ad approved, not the story.

Two phones showing the same clinic ad: Hate your belly rejected, Tired all the time approved
Same clinic, two ads

The difference is one line.

The rejected version tells the viewer something about their body. The approved version asks a question the viewer already has. Same offer, same clinic, same page. One gets the account disabled and one fills the calendar.

This is the whole skill. Not avoiding health topics, which would leave you with nothing to say, but writing the line so it is about the visit and not about the person.

What we do differently

A person reads every post.

No tool removes the compliance read. Every ad and every creator post gets read by a person against the platform rule for your category and the state rule for your license, two rounds, before permission is requested. For prescription products that read is a drug-ad review, and it is the reason those programs carry a $1,000 line.

  • ClaimsNothing a clinician could not substantiate. No cure, reverse, guarantee.
  • ConsentWritten marketing authorization for every patient, alumni or family appearance, on file with the ad.
  • DisclosurePaid partnership disclosed where the viewer sees it. Logged and kept.
  • The pageThe landing page says what the ad says. No placeholder reviews, no fake widgets, no claim the ad did not make.

Newport Beach office. Clients anywhere.

Platform rules are national; license rules are state by state. We run this from Newport Beach and work remote with clinics across the United States, reading both sets of rules for wherever you are. We get calls from Florida and we do that work.

Questions

Asked after the rejection.

How long does LegitScript take for a treatment center?
Plan on weeks, not days. The application needs licenses, registrations, a HIPAA-compliant privacy policy, and your ad materials, and the review is thorough. Expedited review starts within two business days for an extra $2,500. Nothing runs on Google or Meta until it is granted.
Why do behavioral health and treatment centers get their ad accounts disabled?
Addiction treatment is the most regulated category in advertising. LegitScript Addiction Treatment Certification is a named prerequisite on Google and Meta, alumni are still patients under 42 CFR Part 2, and referral compensation is governed by EKRA. We read the account and the creative against the current rule before anything runs.
Can a patient or client appear in our ad?
Only with a written authorization for marketing use, which is a separate document from a treatment consent and covers any identifying detail. We keep the signed copy on file with the ad.
Do we need LegitScript?
A third-party certification that Google, Meta, Microsoft Bing, LinkedIn and TikTok recognize for regulated healthcare advertisers. Google requires it for pharmacies and telemedicine that ends in a prescription; Google and Meta require the addiction treatment version before treatment ads run. A clinic that does not prescribe remotely usually does not need it.
What happens if an ad gets rejected anyway?
We read the rejection reason, change the line that caused it, and resubmit. If the account itself is restricted we file the review with the policy citation. Most rejections are a single sentence, and most accounts come back.
Do you work with behavioral health and treatment centers outside California?
Yes. Platform rules are the same in every state; license rules differ, and we read both. We run this from Newport Beach and work remote with behavioral health and treatment centers across the United States. We get calls from Florida and we do that work.
