99% of Americans Use AI. Half Say They Don't.

In a late 2024 Gallup survey, 99 percent of US adults had used an AI-powered product in the past week. Half of them said they had not. That gap explains a lot about where AI really is in business right now: everywhere in the background, used on purpose by about half of employees, and used every day by very few. Here is what the numbers say, and what to do with them.

The short answer

Gallup found 99 percent of US adults used an AI-powered product in a single week, but only 36 percent said they had used an AI-enabled product in the past seven days. At work, about half of US employees use AI at least occasionally and 15 percent use it daily. AI agents, software that does tasks instead of just answering, are the next step, and almost nobody measures them yet. The gap between occasional and daily use is where the advantage is.

The gap: 99 percent use it, 36 percent say they do

Gallup and Telescope surveyed 3,975 US adults between November 26 and December 4, 2024. When asked whether they had used an AI-enabled product in the past seven days, 36 percent said yes, 50 percent said no, and 14 percent were not sure (Gallup, January 2025).

Then Gallup asked about six everyday products that run on AI: personal virtual assistants, navigation apps, weather apps, social media, streaming services and online shopping. 99 percent had used at least one of them in the past week, and 83 percent had used at least four. Half of the people who first said no turned out to use five or six.

So the question is not whether people use AI. It is whether they recognize it. Recognition is growing: Pew Research Center found 49 percent of US adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33 percent in 2024, though Pew notes the 2024 question was worded differently (February 2026 survey, published June 2026).

At work: about half use it, few use it every day

Gallup now tracks this quarterly. As of May 2026, 52 percent of US employees use AI in their role a few times a year or more, 30 percent a few times a week or more, and 15 percent daily. In Gallup's words, "Three in 10 employees have integrated AI into their weekly workflows."

The US Census Bureau measured it a different way and landed in the same place: about 56 percent of US workers said they had used AI on the job for at least one of 11 tasks in its March 2026 survey. Among workers who used AI, about a third said it cut one or two hours from their tasks (published August 11, 2026).

The companies are not leading the way as much as you might think. Gallup found 47 percent of employees say their organization has integrated AI tools, but only 25 percent say their organization has communicated a clear plan for it.

AI agents are the next step, and almost nobody measures them

Most of the use above is people asking a chatbot a question. An AI agent is different: it takes actions to finish a task. It can pull the numbers, draft the report, check it against your rules and hand you the result to approve.

Here is the honest part: there is no reliable public number yet for how many people use agents at work. Gallup and the Census Bureau measure AI use in general. The agent surveys that exist mostly come from companies that sell agents, and their numbers swing widely. We would rather tell you that than quote one of them.

What we can say from our own business: we run much of our day-to-day work through agents now, from research to drafting to checking our own facts, with a person approving anything a client or the public sees. It has taken a lot of trial and error, and we are still learning.

What this means for your business

  1. Your customers already use AI, even if they would not say so. More of them are asking ChatGPT, Google's AI answers and Perplexity about businesses like yours. Our review of 30 studies on what gets a business named by AI covers what actually works.
  2. The advantage is in daily use, not occasional use. Half of employees have tried AI. Fifteen percent use it every day. Pick one repetitive task in your business and make AI part of doing it every day.
  3. Keep a person on anything that matters. Money, strategy and anything a customer sees should be checked by a human before it goes out. That is how we run agents, and it is the part people skip.

FAQMore questions people ask

What percentage of Americans use AI?

Almost all of them, whether they know it or not. In a Gallup and Telescope survey of 3,975 US adults (fielded November 26 to December 4, 2024, published January 2025), 99 percent said they had used at least one of six common AI-enabled products in the past week, such as navigation apps, streaming services or social media. When asked directly whether they had used an AI-enabled product, only 36 percent said yes.

How many employees use AI at work?

About half, but few use it every day. Gallup reports that as of May 2026, 52 percent of US employees use AI in their role a few times a year or more, 30 percent a few times a week or more, and 15 percent daily. The US Census Bureau found about 56 percent of US workers had used AI on the job for at least one of 11 tasks in its March 2026 survey.

Does AI actually save time at work?

For many people who use it, yes. In the Census Bureau's March 2026 survey, published August 2026, about a third of workers who used AI at work said it cut one or two hours from their tasks, a quarter said it saved less than an hour, and some said it added time.

What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is software that takes actions to complete a task, not just answer a question. A chatbot writes you an email; an agent can draft it, check your calendar, pull the numbers it needs and file the result, with you approving the steps that matter.

How many people use AI agents at work?

Nobody has a reliable number yet. Gallup and the Census Bureau measure AI use at work in general, not agents specifically. The agent surveys that exist mostly come from companies that sell agents, and their numbers vary widely, so treat any single figure with caution.
