The short answer: about half of American adults use an AI chatbot, but only somewhere between 8 and 15 percent use AI agents that take actions for them. Call it roughly 1 in 10. Among billion-dollar US companies, 53 percent have agents deployed, and 18 percent run several agents together across their workflows.
I made a video on this because the gap surprised me. Everybody says they use AI. Very few have it doing real work. Watch it below, then the numbers and every source are underneath.

The AI ladderFrom using AI to having it do the work.
Each rung below comes from a different survey, so read each one against its own source.
- 9 in 10 Americans use AI on their phone, but only 38 percent realize it (Talker Research for Samsung, 2,000 adults, surveyed November 25 to December 2, 2025).
- 49 percent use an AI chatbot, and 24 percent use one daily (Pew Research Center, 5,119 adults, surveyed February 2026).
- 52 percent of US workers use AI at work, 30 percent a few times a week or more and 15 percent daily (Gallup, 22,573 workers, May 2026).
- 8 to 15 percent have agents acting for them. The next section explains the range.
AI agentsWhat counts as an agent, and how many people use one.
A chatbot answers you. An agent takes a goal and does the steps. Channel V Media's survey defines agentic AI as "AI systems designed to act autonomously, making decisions and taking actions to achieve specific goals with minimal human intervention."
- 7.7 percent of American adults use agentic AI (Prosper Insights & Analytics, analyzed by Channel V Media, 7,675 adults, June 2026). In the same survey, 40.1 percent would hand an agent at least one everyday task.
- About 15 percent of adults use an agent regularly. That is our arithmetic from Menlo Ventures and Morning Consult (5,067 adults, July 2026): 64 percent of adults have used AI, and 24 percent of those AI users use an agent regularly. 41 percent of AI users have tried one.
The two surveys define an agent differently, which is why the honest answer is a range, 8 to 15 percent, and not one number.
BusinessesHow many companies use AI agents.
- 19.8 percent of all US businesses use AI in any business function (US Census Bureau, May 2026).
- 53 percent of billion-dollar US companies have AI agents deployed, against 55 percent the quarter before (KPMG AI Quarterly Pulse, Q2 2026, 204 leaders at companies with $1 billion or more in revenue, fielded April 28 to May 25, 2026).
- 18 percent of those companies run several agents together across their workflows, double the 9 percent KPMG reported before.
- 52 percent of executives say their company actively uses AI agents, and 39 percent say it has launched more than ten (Google Cloud, ROI of AI, September 4, 2025, 3,466 senior leaders at companies already using generative AI, 24 countries). The 13 percent putting at least half of their future AI budget into agents report a return from generative AI more often: 88 percent, against 74 percent on average. Those are executives' own reports.
No survey I found measures businesses run by teams of agents.
The riskWhere one bad moment comes from.
32 percent of AI users have already let AI act for them without a final OK (Menlo Ventures with Morning Consult, July 2026). That is a share of AI users, not of all adults.
In my business, agents do real work every day, and the rules are simple. One agent does the work. A different agent checks it. A human presses send. And we watch what every task costs, because everything an agent reads and writes is counted in tokens, and tokens cost money.
Most people are talking to AI. Very few are working with it. The gap is not the technology. It is the system around it.
