What these numbers do not show
- The $5.3 trillion is what the whole country spends on health care, including hospitals, insurers and government programs. It is not a market a clinic can address and it says nothing about cash-pay demand.
- The Global Wellness Institute figure is the institute's own measurement across eleven sectors from spas to real estate, released in its Global Wellness Economy Monitor. It is the only figure in this group that is not a government statistic.
- Prevalence is not demand. 40.3 percent obesity does not tell you how many people will pay for weight loss care, or in which city.
- FastStats pages change under you. The CDC last reviewed each page on the date shown; re-read the page before quoting it to a client.

What these numbers do not show
- A benchmark CPL is one vendor's figure across its own customers' campaigns: LocaliQ says its healthcare "averages" are technically medians across 3,542 campaigns, its Facebook report states no sample size, and its healthcare and all-industry figures come from different reports and periods. Your category, your city and your landing page move it more than any benchmark does. The full cost-per-lead and cost-per-customer ranges by business type are on the benchmarks page and feed the calculator.
- Policy text does not tell you how a reviewer will read your ad. Only a review outcome in a live account does. Google's page says stem cell therapy and PRP are not allowed; our own Study 01 shows enforcement lands on individual keywords in ways the policy text does not describe.
- Google's own economic impact methodology arrives at $8 of profit per $1 of ad spend by assuming $2 of profit per $1 from ads (a 2009 paper), five organic clicks for every ad click (a second 2009 paper) and organic clicks worth 70 percent of an ad click. It is an assumption that counts profit from organic search as well as ads, not a measurement of any clinic. We cite it only so you recognise it when you see it. [40]

Search and AI search behaviour
How people actually find health information in 2026: probability-panel surveys from Pew and Gallup, and one measured clickstream panel. Adoption and substitution are different numbers; both are here.
About half
of US adults use AI chatbots, February 2026
Pew finds about half of US adults now use AI chatbots, up from a third in 2024 (Pew notes the 2024 question wording and base differ), and roughly one in four use them daily.
Pew Research Center 17 June 2026 [41]
What the source says
About half of U.S. adults now report using AI chatbots, up substantially from the summer of 2024. [...] This includes roughly one-in-four who use these tools on daily basis.
We surveyed 5,119 U.S. adults from Feb. 17 to 23, 2026.
Prior to 2026, the question was “Have you ever used an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot?” and was asked of those who had heard at least a little about chatbots.

Google users who encountered an AI summary also rarely clicked on a link in the summary itself. This occurred in just 1% of all visits to pages with such a summary.

Clicks and no-clicks on Google, percent of searches or visits
What these numbers do not show
- "About half use AI chatbots" is adoption, not substitution. The same Pew wave found 60 percent read AI summaries inside Google; neither figure measures whether anyone searches Google less.
- Pew's click data is from March 2025 and is the one measurement here of named people's clicks on real searches, with and without a summary. SparkToro's panel measures clicks too, in aggregate; the two use different methods and periods.
- SparkToro's 68.01 percent comes from a Similarweb browser panel that excludes the Google mobile app, which the author says makes the real figure higher. Its 2024 figure of 60.45 percent came from a different panel (Datos), a comparison SparkToro itself calls apples and oranges, so the two are two measurements, not a trend. SparkToro sells audience research software; Rand Fishkin discloses the method and the limits himself.
- We found no probability-based measurement of people asking an AI assistant to recommend a doctor or a clinic in Pew's or Gallup's 2025 to 2026 work. Vendor surveys that claim one do not publish their method, and none is cited here.

What these numbers do not show

- Client names, cities and account IDs are withheld in the studies and here. No client figure appears on this page beyond what the published studies already carry.
Method
How the figures were chosen and read
- Primary sources only. Government statistical agencies and regulators (CMS, CDC, BLS, Census, SAMHSA, FDA, FTC, the Federal Reserve), platform policy pages and company filings with the SEC, trade bodies, peer-reviewed abstracts, and probability-panel surveys from Pew Research Center and Gallup. Vendor datasets appear where no public measurement exists and are labelled, with their sample stated. No statistics roundup, blog list or secondary summary is cited anywhere on this page.
- Read, not recalled. Every page was fetched on 1 or 2 October 2026 and its text saved. Each read time is given in UTC in the sources list with the HTTP status: to the second for the 42 pages read by this build or by the HQ policy tracker, and to the minute for the 24 captures reused from the HQ calculator research, whose log recorded minutes. A page that returned an error, a login wall or a bot check was recorded and left; nothing was retried by another route. The pages that would not open are listed in the companion file.
- Quoted word for word. Each figure carries a quotation of 40 words or fewer cut from the saved page text by a script, which stops the build if a quotation cannot be found in the capture. Omitted words are marked [...]. We write percent in our own sentences and keep the source's own symbols inside quotations.
- Dated as the source dates it. The date shown is the date the page or dataset states: a survey field period, a fiscal year, a release date or a last-reviewed date. Where a page states no date, it says "undated" and the data year is given instead.
- What it does not show. Every group ends with the limits of its own figures. A number without its denominator is a lead, not a finding.
- Our own data. Two figures groups come from PELORA's published studies, each from one or two client accounts. No client is named and no unpublished client figure appears here.
The full record, with each quotation, URL, saved capture and read time, is in the CSV. The companion study pages are Study 01 and Study 02; the per-category cost ranges live on the ad benchmarks page and in the calculator; the platform rules in full are on the health advertising compliance pages.

What does a lead cost for a clinic in 2026?
The average cost per lead for healthcare search ads was $66.02 across 3,542 US campaigns in LocaliQ's benchmark running October 2024 to September 2025; mental health ran $141.17, addiction recovery $120.30 and general dentistry $84.77. How many people use AI chatbots for health questions?
Pew Research Center found that 34 percent of US adults ever use AI chatbots for at least one of eight health reasons, and a quarter use them to diagnose symptoms, in a June 2026 survey of 3,488 adults. Gallup and West Health found 25 percent had used an AI tool for health information or advice in late 2025, and only 4 percent of recent users strongly trusted its accuracy.
Do AI summaries in Google reduce clicks to websites?
Pew measured it. Tracking 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025, Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8 percent of visits when an AI summary appeared and 15 percent when it did not, and that longer, question-style searches produced summaries more often. SparkToro, using a Similarweb browser panel, reports 68.01 percent of US Google searches ended without a click in January to April 2026; its 2024 figure of 60.45 percent came from a different panel, so the two are separate measurements rather than a trend.
What are the main advertising rules for health and wellness businesses?
Meta requires ads for dietary, health, weight loss and cosmetic products or procedures to target people 18 or older. Google lets advertisers use prescription drug terms in ads without certification but requires certification to keyword-target them, and has named stem cell therapy and PRP among treatments it does not allow since October 2019. The FTC's consumer review rule took effect on 21 October 2024.
How big is the health and wellness market?
US national health expenditure was $5.3 trillion in 2024, 18.0 percent of GDP, according to CMS, and health care and social assistance revenue ran at $1,147.5 billion in the second quarter of 2026 according to the Census Bureau. The Global Wellness Institute puts the global wellness economy at $6.8 trillion in 2024; that is a research institute's own figure, not a government count.
