The short answer
ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your business found, cited and named when ChatGPT searches the web. Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler, stay indexed in Bing, answer buyers' questions plainly on your site, and earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT cites. PELORA does this for healthcare brands from $2,000 a month.
Last updated . What we checked: OpenAI's crawler documentation and its ChatGPT search help page (read live), Microsoft's 2023 announcement, Bing Webmaster Guidelines and IndexNow, each read October 19, 2026.
How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to name?
ChatGPT answers from two places: what its model learned in training, and what it finds when it searches the web. You can change the second directly and the first only slowly, so ChatGPT SEO starts with search.
Where a ChatGPT answer comes from, based on OpenAI's crawler documentation and ChatGPT search help page.
When ChatGPT searches, OpenAI describes the process in its help center: "ChatGPT search typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries that it sends those providers," and "ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed." The good news is in OpenAI's crawler guide: a site owner "can allow OAI-SearchBot in order to appear in search results."
So the practical job has four parts. Let OpenAI's search crawler in. Be present in the indexes ChatGPT's search draws on. Make the passage that answers the buyer's question easy to find and quote on your site. And be described the same way on the other sites ChatGPT reads, because a recommendation is easier to make when several sources agree.
Which OpenAI crawlers should you allow?
Allow OAI-SearchBot. It is the one that decides whether you can appear in ChatGPT search, and OpenAI is explicit: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."
Crawler
What OpenAI says it does
Our advice
OAI-SearchBot
"used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features"
Allow, in robots.txt and at your host, CDN and firewall
GPTBot
Collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models; publishers can disallow it to opt out of training
Your choice. Blocking it does not remove you from search
ChatGPT-User
Fetches a page when a person asks ChatGPT to; "not used to determine whether content may appear in Search"
Leave it alone; it acts for a person in the moment
OpenAI confirms the two can be set separately: "a webmaster can allow OAI-SearchBot in order to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot." A robots.txt that does exactly that looks like this:
# Let ChatGPT search find and cite your pages
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
# Optional: opt out of model training, without leaving search
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
Two checks people miss. First, robots.txt is not the only gate: OpenAI says to "confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses," and many firewalls block unknown bots by default. Second, allow time: "it can take ~24 hours from a site's robots.txt update for our systems to adjust."
Does ChatGPT use Bing?
Partly, as far as anyone outside OpenAI can tell, and you should be indexed in Bing either way. In May 2023 Microsoft announced "Bing is coming to ChatGPT as the default search experience." OpenAI's help page (read live October 19, 2026) is less specific: it says "ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers" and links to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies. It does not say how much of any answer comes from which source.
What that means in practice: verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and use IndexNow, which lets sites "instantly inform search engines" about changes and is supported by Microsoft Bing. Bing's own guidelines also govern Microsoft Copilot, so the same work serves Copilot directly, and ChatGPT to whatever extent its search uses Bing. Bing warns that "NOARCHIVE prevents content from being used in Copilot responses," so check that tag is not on pages you want cited.
What sources does ChatGPT cite for business questions?
A mix of the business's own website and third-party sites: directories, review platforms, news, association pages, forums and "best of" lists. The mix changes by question, by category and over time, and the industry studies that try to measure it disagree, so we do not quote a single number. We measure your category instead.
Here is how. We write down the 20 to 40 questions your buyers would ask, run each in ChatGPT several times, and log every source it cites. That list becomes the plan: fix your own pages where ChatGPT already cites your site, and earn a presence on the third-party sites it keeps citing where it does not. For a clinic, that is often a medical directory, a review platform and the state license lookup. For a supplement brand, it is more often independent review and testing sites.
A pattern worth checking first: when ChatGPT describes a business correctly but does not recommend it, look at the sites it cites. Thin or inconsistent information there is a common cause. Fix the facts there, and the answer has something to stand on.
Work through these in order. Each week builds on the one before.
Week 1: open the doors
Add an explicit Allow for OAI-SearchBot (and PerplexityBot) to robots.txt.
Ask your host or CDN whether bot protection blocks OpenAI's published IP ranges; test it.
Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, and set up IndexNow.
Check analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com, so you have a "before" number.
Week 2: be one clear business
Write one plain description of what you do, who you serve and where, and use it everywhere.
Match your name, phone and address details across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and key directories.
Put the facts people check on the page in text: licenses, credentials, years in business, service area.
Week 3: answer the questions
Pick the ten questions buyers ask most and give each a page or section that answers it in the first 40 to 60 words.
Keep key answers out of images, sliders and collapsed tabs.
Add sources and named experts to the claims that matter.
Week 4: earn mentions and start measuring
Claim and complete the directory and review profiles ChatGPT cites in your category.
Start a steady review request process that asks every customer the same way.
Run your question set, log mentions, citations and recommendations, and repeat it monthly.
How does ChatGPT SEO work for clinics and health brands?
The same way, with more proof on the page, because people ask ChatGPT health questions before they ever call. A family looking for a treatment program, or someone comparing clinics for a new therapy, will often ask which providers are legitimate before they ask about anything else.
For a clinic, the answer ChatGPT can give depends on what it can find: the medical director's name and credentials, license details, the treatments offered in plain words, prices if you publish them, and recent reviews on the platforms it reads. For a treatment center, add accreditation and a listing that matches public locators. For a supplement or wellness brand, add ingredient sources and testing, written as evidence rather than promises.
We see the channel in our own pipeline. Of the 27 prospects who answered "How did you hear about us?" on our booking form between September 3 and October 19, 2026, seven named ChatGPT or another AI assistant. And when we read the robots.txt files of supplement brands, not one of the 28 we could read named a single AI crawler (our study of 30 brands). For clinic owners, our step by step guide is how to get your clinic named in ChatGPT.
In health, we never write a claim your clinician has not approved, and we never describe a reader's condition back to them. Being cited for a wrong statement is worse than not being cited.
How do you track traffic from ChatGPT?
Look for chatgpt.com as a source in your analytics. ChatGPT visits arrive labeled chatgpt.com, so in Google Analytics 4 they show up under session source in the traffic acquisition report; that is where we see ours.
Clicks are only part of it. Many people read ChatGPT's answer and then search your name or call you directly, which analytics will not attribute. That is why we also ask "How did you hear about us?" on booking forms, and run a fixed set of questions monthly to see whether you are mentioned, cited or recommended.
Can you use ChatGPT to do your SEO?
For drafts and research, yes; for publishing unchecked, no. ChatGPT is useful for outlining a page, listing the questions people ask, drafting structured data for a human to verify, or rewriting a dense paragraph into plain English. It is not a source. It can state wrong facts confidently, which matters most on health pages.
Google does not ban AI-assisted content, but its spam policy names "Using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users" as scaled content abuse. Our rule: a person checks every fact against a primary source, and on health pages a clinician approves every claim.

What people ask about ChatGPT SEO.
How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT?
Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler in robots.txt and at your host, be indexed in Bing, answer your buyers' questions plainly on your own pages, and make sure the directories and review sites ChatGPT cites describe you accurately. Then check your question set monthly. No one can guarantee placement; OpenAI says so itself.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?
No. GPTBot relates to model training and OAI-SearchBot to search. OpenAI says a site can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what keeps you out of ChatGPT search answers.
How long does it take ChatGPT to find my website?
OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search. Being cited for competitive questions takes longer, because it depends on your pages being the best answer and on what other sites say about you.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and links Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies. Microsoft announced Bing as ChatGPT's default search experience in 2023. OpenAI's help page does not name Google as a search provider. Being well indexed in Bing is a sensible baseline either way.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No agency can buy you a place inside ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI says it ranks search results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed. What you can do is make your business the clearest, best-supported answer it can find.
Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?
The foundation is shared: crawlable pages, clear answers and real authority. ChatGPT adds its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, a heavier reliance on what third-party sites say about you, and its own measurement, through chatgpt.com referrals and repeated question checks.
How do I know if ChatGPT is sending me customers?
Check analytics for visits with the source chatgpt.com, and add ChatGPT as an option to the How did you hear about us question on your booking or intake form. Many people read the answer and then call or search your name, so the form catches what analytics misses.
PELORA booking records: answers to "How did you hear about us?" on our Calendly booking form, 27 prospects, September 3 to October 19, 2026. Internal records, read October 19, 2026.
